Curated by Sasha Burkhanova-Khabadze

Temple Gallery in Birmingham is proud to present Resilience in Red: Art in Support of Ukraine, an exhibition showcasing the power of art as a medium of resistance and solidarity. This exhibition, which opened on 12 December 2022 and runs until 17 January 2023, brings together a diverse group of Ukrainian artists and Russian artists who support Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict. The central theme of the exhibition is the colour red, symbolising both the bloodshed of war and the resilience of the human spirit.

Exhibition Highlights

Anna Zhdanova’s Series: RED Anna Zhdanova, renowned for her abstract works, presents her compelling series RED. These large-scale abstract paintings, dominated by various shades of red, convey intense emotions associated with conflict—anger, pain, passion, and defiance. Zhdanova’s work pays tribute to the resilience of the Ukrainian people and serves as a powerful call to global solidarity.

Fragments of Home by Dmytro Shevchenko Ukrainian artist Dmytro Shevchenko offers a deeply personal series titled Fragments of Home. This collection features mixed-media installations incorporating debris and remnants from war-torn areas of Ukraine. Using materials such as shattered glass and twisted metal, Shevchenko creates poignant sculptures and assemblages that tell stories of loss and displacement, yet also highlight the enduring spirit of those who find beauty and hope amidst the ruins. The installations are complemented by Shevchenko’s black-and-white photographs, capturing moments of quiet resilience and community.

Voices of Tomorrow by Olena Koval Olena Koval’s Voices of Tomorrow is an interactive multimedia space dedicated to the children affected by the conflict in Ukraine. This section includes digital art, video installations, and participatory activities. Koval collaborates with children from Ukrainian refugee camps to create digital paintings and animations expressing their hopes and dreams for the future. The video installations feature interviews and short films where these children share their stories, offering an unfiltered glimpse into their experiences and aspirations. Visitors are invited to contribute messages of support and create their own pieces of art, fostering a sense of global community and solidarity.

Supporting Activities

Temple Gallery will host a series of events throughout the exhibition, including artist talks, panel discussions with experts on the Ukraine conflict, and workshops for children and families. A portion of the proceeds from the exhibition will be donated to organisations providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

Join us at Temple Gallery to experience Resilience in Red: Art in Support of Ukraine and engage with powerful artistic expressions of resistance, resilience, and hope. Stand with Ukraine and be part of a global community showing support in this critical time.
