A new chapter in the career of acclaimed British artist Frank Bowling begins with the official launch of the Frank Bowling Foundation in London. Created to expand access to the arts and support creative education, the charitable organisation formalises decades of philanthropic work undertaken by the artist.

The foundation will be publicly introduced on June 24, followed the next day by the opening of its inaugural initiative, Frank Bowling: Driven to Draw, at the Royal Drawing School.

Building a Legacy Beyond the Studio

Over a career spanning more than seventy years, Bowling has become one of the most significant figures in post-war abstraction. Working between London, New York and other international centres, he developed a distinctive visual language that contributed to wider conversations around transatlantic abstraction and contemporary painting.

While Bowling is widely recognised for his artistic achievements, the creation of the foundation draws attention to another important part of his legacy: his longstanding commitment to supporting artists, students and cultural institutions.

The organisation is backed by a substantial gift from the artist, including paintings, sculptures, works on paper and archival material documenting both his creative practice and professional life.

Expanding Access to Creative Opportunities

At the centre of the foundation’s mission is the belief that arts education should be accessible to a broader range of people, particularly younger learners.

Through outreach projects, educational programmes and future partnerships, the organisation aims to encourage participation in the arts while helping emerging talent develop its creative potential.

The foundation also brings together a number of Bowling’s existing philanthropic activities. Over the years, he has contributed to scholarships and bursary programmes at institutions including University of the Arts London and Hampstead School of Art. His support has also extended to cultural organisations such as Whitechapel Gallery and South London Gallery.

By bringing these initiatives under a dedicated charitable structure, the foundation establishes a framework through which this work can continue and expand.

Art Education at the Forefront

The launch comes at a time when questions surrounding access to arts education remain increasingly urgent. Bowling has consistently advocated for the importance of creative learning and for providing young people with the resources and opportunities needed to develop their abilities.

His support for initiatives such as CIRCA PIPELINE, which sought to provide art materials to state primary schools across the United Kingdom, reflects this wider commitment to making creativity accessible regardless of background or circumstance.

For Bowling, supporting future generations of artists is closely connected to maintaining a vibrant and inclusive cultural landscape.

From Philanthropy to a Permanent Foundation

The establishment of the Frank Bowling Foundation transforms a long history of individual giving into a permanent organisation with a clear public purpose.

Its creation allows scholarships, educational partnerships and outreach programmes to be developed as part of a wider strategy rather than as separate initiatives. It also creates an institutional home for artworks and archival materials connected to Bowling’s life and career.

The foundation therefore operates both as a steward of the artist’s legacy and as an active platform for future cultural and educational work.

Looking Towards the Future

The Frank Bowling Foundation represents more than a celebration of an extraordinary artistic career. It signals a long-term investment in education, community engagement and access to culture.

As the organisation begins its public activities, it offers a model for how artists can extend their influence beyond exhibitions and collections, using their legacy to create opportunities for others.

Through scholarships, outreach programmes and educational initiatives, the foundation aims to ensure that creative talent can be recognised and supported wherever it emerges.

Its official launch, together with the opening of Frank Bowling: Driven to Draw, marks an important milestone in Bowling’s continuing contribution to contemporary art and arts education.
